off to a good start

I’ve created a monster.  There I said it.

I’ve wanted to get in shape for years now.  I’ll start and things will be progressing nicely but then the double bacon cheeseburger, fries, and a milkshake come calling and I think back at how good that relationship has been and my new fitness regime/friend has to take a back seat.

This is not a new year’s resolution…I’ll repeat that, it is not a new year’s resolution.  With new year’s resolutions, you typically give up on them two to three weeks in.

I have a friend who recently graduated from the fire academy and will be a full fledged fire-fighter whenever he applies to stations.  I asked him to work out with me and take me through his work-out program as he is in shape to quite in shape.  He is the type of guy that won’t let you give up and when you do stop he yells at you to get moving…apparently this is the type of motivation I need in my life.

We started yesterday.

I ran for more than I wanted to run, and when we got to the end of our 1.5 mile “warmup” I found the nearest trash can and promptly lost my breakfast that I was told to eat because it would make things easier.   We then did push-ups and sit-ups.  A surprisingly simple workout but the amount of pain I am in today says that even the surprisingly simple can be challenging and difficult.

Believe it or not, I’m excited.  I’m ready to tackle this new life goal and change a lifetimes worth of bad behaviors and patterns into a more manageable healthy lifestyle.  And with my friend playing the role of Drill Sergeant, I’m sure that I’ll get to where I want to be.
